In 'Sliver Of Sky,' Barry Lopez Confronts Childhood Sexual Abuse The nature writer has an essay in January's Harper's Magazine that details the four years of his childhood during which he says he was routinely raped and molested by a family friend. Barry Lopez is known for writing about the natural world.

His final work published during his lifetime was Horizon (2019), an autobiographical telling of his travels over his lifetime. The Guardian describes the book as "a contemporary epic, at once pained and urgent, personal and oracular".

In his career of over 50 years, he traveled to over 80 countries, writing extensively about distant and exotic landscapes including the Arctic wilderness, exploring the relationships between human cultures and wild nature. Through his works, he also highlighted the harm caused by human actions on nature.

"'Even though I appear to write largely about other landscapes and animals,' he said in 1986 when he received the National Book Award for nonfiction, 'what is in my gut as a writer is a concern with the fate of the country I live in and the dignity and morality of the people I live with.'"
